Jamaica, Adidas Get Helping Hand From Fashion World for New National Team Kits
Jamaica’s national football team got a helping hand from the world of fashion for their new home and away kits.
The Jamaica Football Federation and Adidas unveiled the new kits on Monday, February 6. These are the first kits produced under the new contract between the two sides, and they enlisted fashion design label Wales Bonner to help bring them to life.
“The opportunity to design the first on pitch kits for the Jamaican national teams with adidas Football has been such a special opportunity. It has meant so much to me personally and I am very grateful for the support and trust of adidas Football and the Jamaican Football Federation,” said label founder Grace Wales Bonner. “For the collection, we set out to celebrate Jamaican style and to offer something timeless, elegant and essential. I hope the shirts bring joy to the wearers and carry forward the everlasting beauty and uplifting spirit of the island.”
The home kit features bright green vertical chalk stripes on a yellow base. The crew neck collar features yellow, green and black stripes that overlap at the front of the neck. Those stripes also feature in the sleeve cuffs and the taping running down the sides and across the back hem. The Adidas shoulder stripes are black, and the Wales Bonner logo appears on the back collar in black.
Collaborating with fashion brand Wales Bonner, the Jamaica football jersey is an homage to the country’s rich and vibrant colors; Black, Gold, and Green. The energy of the island is accentuated by fine pinstripe details to echo the subtle groove of Jamaican music and subcultural style.
The shorts that go with the home kit are green, with yellow Adidas stripes down the sides. The Wales Bonner logo is in yellow below the JFF crest on the right leg, and the yellow-green-black stripes run across the back hems. The socks feature green, yellow and black hoops.
Jamaica’s away kit, meanwhile, is “Night Brown” with saturated yellow accents like the Adidas shoulder stripes and monochrome JFF crest. The collar and sleeve cuffs feature saturated red, green and yellow stripes, as do the side stripes and back hem stripe.
Woven from the collective memories of proud Jamaicans, the Away jersey celebrates the commitment of craftsmanship with its premium collar and cuffs in the signature Wales Bonner crochet texture.
The shorts are also brown, with tonal vertical stripes woven into the fabric. The Adidas side stripes, JFF crest and Wales Bonner logo all appear in saturated yellow, while the yellow, green and red stripes from the back hem of the shirt also appear on the back hem of the shorts. The socks contain a pattern of brown, red, green and yellow hoops.
Along with the match kits, a new Wales Bonner-designed pre-match top was also released on Monday. It features a multicolored knitwear-style print on a navy blue base. The crew neck collar is light yellow, as are the monochrome JFF crest on the left chest and the Adidas logo on the right chest.
Jamaica’s women’s national team, the Reggae Girlz, will debut the new kits in the FFA Cup of Nations, being held in Australia from February 13 to 25. They’ll also wear the new kits this summer during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where they’ll play in Group F alongside France, Brazil and the winner of a playoff between Chinese Taipei, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea and Panama.
The Jamaican men’s team, the Reggae Boyz, will wear the away kit for the first time in their Concacaf Nations League match against Mexico on March 26.
UPDATE (Thursday, February 9): Jamaica’s new kits are now available for purchase on Adidas’s UK website, and the personalization options show that they’ll have a custom name and number font. The font resembles that uses for the Wales Bonner logo.
