Since time immemorial, love stories have never failed to capture the public’s imagination, with everything from books, plays, songs and poems dedicated to capturing its emotional highs.

Many of these fictitious love stories are peppered with conflict and obstacles to show that the course of love rarely runs smoothly. But every once in a while, a real-life love story surfaces to show that some relationships are like the fairy tales we would read about as children.

This is the case with one charming couple hailing from Hamilton, Ohio. Not only did they celebrate 79 years of marriage on June 8, 2022, but both are turning 100 years old in the same year.

Hubert and June Malicote told WLWT that they first met in Hamilton after both moved from rural Kentucky in July 1922 to find jobs. It was then that Cupid’s arrow took hold of Hubert at a church event.

“Miraculously the back pew was empty, so, we went in and they were all standing and right in front of us was a pew full of young girls. And, she looked around at me and smiled,” Hubert said.

By June 8, 1943, the lovebirds were married, but World War II saw Hubert whisked away from his lady love to the shores of Hawaii, unbeknownst to June. But Hubert had a trick up his sleeve.

“One evening I was walking through the commissary, and I saw a grass skirt on the wall. I thought if I could mail that, it would give her some indication of where I might be.”

Weeks later, Hubert was surprised to receive a picture of June wearing the skirt.

“I got back a picture and I had my own Honolulu girl.”

And the secret behind the duo’s lasting love? Never arguing.

“We’ve never had a quarrel,” June told WLWT. “We’ve never had one quarrel.”

“We didn’t go through life without problems, but we would never do anything to hurt each other,” Hubert added while speaking to Today.

“If there’s controversy, you might have to walk away for a couple minutes,” Hubert said.

“Then you come back in and change the subject or you work it out.”

This approach appeared to have worked wonders for the couple, but they also had another secret to their strong bond: spending quality time together.

June and Hubert spend every night together enjoying dinner and a movie before giving each other a kiss before bedtime.

“I put Mom in her wheelchair next to where Dad is sitting and they hold hands and say goodnight to each other,” their 70-year-old daughter Jo told the outlet.

“Then in the morning, they are so happy to see each other. They greet each other with huge smiles.”

According to Hubert, they both simply enjoyed each other’s company.

“We’ve never really gone out much. When the kids were younger we were happy sitting around the table sharing stories about our day,” he said. “We’ve had a wonderful life.”

Hubert and June will observe a significant milestone in 2022, with June turning 100 on July 13 and Hubert hitting the century mark on July 23. They plan to celebrate it with an intimate gathering of loved ones and a church service in their backyard.

With a beautiful family that has now grown to three children, seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, Hubert still never forgets the strong foundation he has laid with June.

“It’s kind of like if we aren’t together, the team is broken.”
