Anyone who has been delaying a new mid-range DIY PC build has probably been eagerly expecting Nvidia’s announcement of the GeForce RTX 4070 desktop GPU. It enables users who do not want to invest $1,000 or more on a large graphics card to take advantage of the company’s remarkable Ada Lovelace graphics architecture.
It goes on sale tomorrow, April 13, and the Nvidia Founders Edition single-fan model costs $599. As usual, factory overclocked versions are also being released by other manufacturers including Asus, Zotac, Gigabyte, MSI, and others.
The RTX 4070 Founders Edition card connects using two 8-pin PCIe connections and requires a 650W power source (an adapter is provided). It can also be linked with a PCIe Gen 5 cable that can handle 300W or more.
Since the RTX 4070 is a two-slot card and much smaller than the RTX 4080, it doesn’t require a large chassis. Its dimensions are 9.6 inches long by 4.4 inches wide, which is comparable to my RTX 3070 Ti Founders Edition card. In spite of being a lower-end GPU than Nvidia’s RTX 4080 or RTX 4090, it still has DLSS 3. It is the latest version of Nvidia’s upscaling method, which reduces the render resolution to improve game performance before intelligently upscales what you see using the GPU’s AI cores.
In the end, DLSS enables your PC to handle more graphically demanding settings like ray tracing without crashing. Additionally, DLSS 3 employs frame creation on the GPU to insert frames that wouldn’t otherwise be there, providing performance that is both faster and more efficient than DLSS 2.
For the RTX 4070, Nvidia is aiming for a 1440p resolution (also known as QHD), and it states that all games may be played at their highest graphics settings. This could be the ideal card given the advent of stunning 1440p OLED gaming panels from LG, Asus, Acer, and other manufacturers that we saw at CES 2023. While TVs may be the focus of 4K, games and the Windows interface look fantastic at 1440p.
